Help and FAQ
Getting started
How do I add a lecture or a playlist?
Tap + and paste a YouTube link: a single lecture (youtube.com/watch?v=… or youtu.be/…) or a playlist (youtube.com/playlist?list=…). A playlist becomes a course with every lecture in order. You can also share straight from the YouTube app: tap Share, pick Lectly (on iPhone, tap More if you don't see it), choose a course and tap Add.
Which links work?
Public and unlisted videos and playlists. Private playlists, Watch Later, Liked videos and Mixes can't be imported, because YouTube keeps them private or makes them differently for each person. Channel links aren't courses: open one of the channel's playlists and share that instead.
Do I need an account?
No. There's no sign-up and no Google or YouTube sign-in. Everything you make is stored on your phone.
Watching
Why does a lecture say "Plays on YouTube only"?
Some channels don't allow their videos to play in other apps. Lectly respects that: tap Watch on YouTube, then come back and mark the lecture done. Your notes for it still work.
Does Lectly play in the background or picture in picture?
No. YouTube's rules for apps like Lectly don't allow background or audio-only play, so a lecture pauses when you leave the app. Your position is saved to the second.
Are there ads?
Lectly has no ads of its own. YouTube may show ads in its player, and Lectly never hides, blocks or skips them: that's how creators are paid.
Can I download lectures to watch offline?
No, lectures always stream from YouTube. Your notes, doubts and flashcards all work offline.
What do speed, ±10 s and the A–B loop do?
Speed is remembered per course. ±10 s jumps back or forward. A–B repeats a hard part: tap once to set A and again to set B, and tap again to stop.
Why did lecture titles or lengths disappear?
YouTube's rules say apps may keep YouTube information for at most 30 days. Lectly refreshes it every 25 days whenever you open the app online. If a refresh hasn't happened for 30 days, the titles are cleared until the next one. Your notes, cards and progress are never touched. Course › More › Refresh lecture details fetches them now.
Studying
How do notes and doubts work?
While you watch, tap Note to pin a thought to that second, or ? to mark something you didn't get. Tap a timestamp to jump back. Answer a doubt later and turn it into a flashcard in one tap.
How are flashcards scheduled?
With FSRS, a modern spaced-repetition algorithm. After each card, choose Again, Hard, Good or Easy; each button shows when the card will come back. You can set how many new cards a day you want in Settings.
How does the streak work?
A day counts when you study: minutes in a lecture, a note you write or cards you revise. Opening the app doesn't count. Two rest days a month don't break the streak.
How does the exam countdown work out my pace?
Add an exam date, or a finish-by date for a course. Lectly compares the lectures left with how many you've done in recent days and tells you whether you'll finish early, on time or late.
Your data
How do I move to a new phone?
Settings › Your data › Back up makes a .lectly file. Save it to Files, iCloud Drive, Google Drive or anywhere you like, then use Restore from a backup on the new phone.
What's in a shared course link?
Only the course name, section names, the first name you type (if any) and YouTube video or playlist IDs. Never your notes, cards or progress. The link's contents stay after the # sign, so they aren't even sent to our server when someone opens it.
How do I delete my data?
Settings › Your data › Delete all data removes everything from the phone at once. Uninstalling the app does too. We hold nothing about you on our server. See the Privacy Policy.
Widgets, Siri and more
How do I add a widget?
On iPhone, touch and hold the home screen, tap Edit › Add Widget and search for Lectly. There are widgets for today's goal, continue, the exam countdown, cards due and your week, plus lock-screen and StandBy sizes. On Android, touch and hold the home screen and choose Widgets.
What can I ask Siri?
"Continue my course in Lectly", "Start a study session in Lectly", "How many cards are due in Lectly", "How many days until my exam in Lectly" and "Add a lecture to Lectly". They also appear in the Shortcuts app.
Which languages does Lectly speak?
English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Turkish, Hindi, Arabic, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, Korean and Traditional Chinese. Change it in Settings › Language.
